Roma's success no surprise

Spalletti tried to keep his feet on the ground after his latest success.

"We have to be cautious and keep our heads," he told a news conference. "Too much euphoria is a dangerous thing. After all we also have to concentrate on the league and we have got a tough game coming up at the weekend."

Real Madrid's worst fears were however confirmed on Wednesday and the loss will have major repercussions at a club that measures success in terms of European trophies.

"We didn't have that magic we've shown on other nights," said skipper Raul, whose 61st Champions League goal was to no avail.

"It's a very heavy blow, a really big disappointment because the Champions League was one of our big objectives this season and now we are out of it."

At the back Pepe gave further evidence of poor judgement in picking up two needless bookings, while his fellow defenders struggled to deal with Roma's sharp passing and running off the ball.

Helping out mom and dad

Since then she's been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease in 2006. Smith, 93, now must use a wheelchair.Although her brothers do as much as they can with yard and house maintenance, Hardin shoulders the day-to-day responsibility of Smith's care.By May 2007 Hardin said she was exhausted "and just felt I couldn't do it anymore. I love my mom, and she was tired out, too. We both needed help."That's when she contacted the Kittitas County office of Aging & Long-Term Care for assistance.Numbers are climbingHardin's arrangements with her mother and the challenges they face are part of the lives of an estimated 30 to 50 million people who provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend in the United States, according to federal government and caregiver association figures from 2000.The numbers have obviously increased since then in all categories of home caregiving as the population grows, the elderly live longer and as baby boomers face how to deal with their sometimes frail parents.Although specific, updated estimates on the number of adult children taking care of one or both parents weren't located, one 2005 source indicated that up to 72 percent of family caregivers are assisting a parent or grandparent, either by living with them or assisting them through regular visits to their home or apartment. In Washington state, 2004 estimates put family caregivers at 616,302 people. No family caregiver figures were available for Kittitas County, but the state estimates that by 2015 those aged 65 and over in Kittitas County will increase 46.1 percent. The state estimated there were nearly 4,500 people in Kittitas County in 2006 aged 65 and older.According to a study by the Center on an Aging Society at Georgetown University, more family caregivers are needed.

Gettysburg's Warrior Stadium project on view

Gettysburg Area School District unveiled a sketch plan for its new Warrior Stadium, submitting drawings to the Straban Township Planning Commission.

The sketch plan, displayed Wednesday, is a typical first step for a large project such as a new stadium, which entered its planning stage last April. Architects from Derck and Edson Associates will present preliminary and final plans to the planning commission as the project continues.

The sketch plan's purpose is to give the planning commission and community members a feel for the design of the project, and the opportunity to ask questions or address any initial concerns they might have.

"In reality, it's a courtesy, but the function is to inform everybody of what's to come," said Alan Zepp, chairman of the planning commission.

LTO sets sights on dirty, dilapidated cars

After cracking the whip on fixers, newly installed Land Transportation Offices (LTO) chief Alberto Suansing is setting his sights on dilapidated and dirty vehicles cruising on major highways across the country.

Suansing said he has directed LTO law enforcers to apprehend and issue citation tickets to drivers of dirty, dilapidated and unsightly vehicles traveling on major highways.

Aside from the decrepit vehicles, the LTO is also targeting vehicles with unauthorized commemorative plates, sirens and other illegal attachments.

According to an LTO insider, some motorists driving rundown cars take the risk of venturing onto highways since the fine is only P150, the same amount imposed for reckless driving, illegal overtaking, and illegal parking.

The source said dilapidated vehicles pose a "major problem" since if one conks out on a busy thoroughfare such as EDSA, it could trigger massive traffic jams

Some local government units that have enacted their own local traffic management code and impose a penalty of P500 or more if the motorist committed the offense in their area of jurisdiction.
