Ford Motor Co. reported Friday its U.S. light vehicle sales fell 3.9 percent in January, even when compared with a weak performance a year ago. Ford said it sold 159,355 light vehicles for the month as it continued a strategy to wean itself from low-profit rental car and other fleet sales. That was down from January 2007 when the company sold 165,877 cars and trucks. Shares rose 21 cents to $6.85. Today's Top 10 OPEC WON'T PUMP MORE OIL OPEC decided against pumping more oil in a rebuff to Washington and a possible prelude to cuts as early as next month should the wounded U.S. economy sap demand for crude. GANNETT PROFITS PLUNGE Gannett Co., the largest newspaper publisher in the nation, said falling revenue from broadcast and newspaper ad sales along with an impairment charge drove fourth quarter earnings down 31 percent.
Off the beaten path in Beijing: where the rock stars, artists and ...
If you're planning a trip to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but you fear you may tire of Olympic fever and flag-waving throngs, don't despair. Beijing has rich offerings when it comes to art, music, groovy boutiques and quiet temples. Most of the capital city's guided tours are about awe and acquisition. Visitors are stunned into submission by the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square, then quickly shuttled to buying sprees at the Pearl Market or Silk Street. The humbling grandeur of those imperial masterpieces is offset by the giddy empowerment of buying quality knockoffs of brands like Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Tiffany for a fraction of the usual cost. Few can resist the temptation. It is usually followed by a belly-busting Peking duck feast. But this kind of Beijing experience is not for everybody, and there are a wealth of unique, low-cost alternatives.
This play bombs, as do its actors
Wednesday's MLB congressional hearings on steroids had us all captivated. And after all was said and done, we still don't feel like we can say anything definitive as to who's telling the truth. We are left with doubts even though interrogating congressmen turned over most of the rocks. Who are we to believe, Mr. Clemens or Mr. McNamee? Both gentlemen, who were under oath, made a shaky case for their own believability. "I never took steroids," said Clemens. "He absolutely was injected (by me) with steroids," said McNamee. This is the nuts of it, and for now it appears it's something we'll not get definite answers to for a long, long time. For now, this should be filed under "public opinion" with discussions vigorously favoring one and then the other.

I haven't seen many Pro Bowl trip packages to Hawaii advertised by travel agents lately. That's because they don't really exist. Every time I have seen the Pro Bowl, there are a lot of empty seats. It's just not a good game for the reasons mentioned above. That's why there isn't any juice to it, and then you take the star power out of it? That really makes it irrelevant. I think that they should just name the team, and not bother with playing the game. Name the players that made the team, give them their bonus checks and move on. The game is pointless for the players and the fans. There isn't an AP All-American game for the college players as far as I know. So the system of just naming the Pro Bowlers and not actually having a Pro Bowl would be a lot like that. If they are going to keep the game, there are 2 things I think they should do to improve it.
Mideast peace talks will resume says Rice
I spoke today again with Secretary of State Rice and she will send an envoy, David Welch, to Cairo where intense efforts are being deployed with a view to reaching a truce," said Abbas, who lost control of Gaza in June after Hamas fighters routed his forces. But Israel gave no indication it intended to stop its military strikes aimed at halting near daily rocket attacks on it by militants from Gaza, a tiny, isolated enclave that is home to 1.5 million largely impoverished Palestinians. "The Israeli army operations against the Gaza Strip will continue as long as the rocket fire continues," a senior official quoted Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as saying. Hamas has rejected Abbas's appeals for a ceasefire, saying the blame lay with Israel. "We are in a state of self-defence.

Dawgs hold off Arizona, earn win
With their newfound momentum and realization of the ability to win the close games, the Dawgs defeated Arizona (9-17, 3-12 Pac-10) on the road 60-58 last night. It wasn't exactly an easy journey. After the Dawgs kept the game to a tie at the end of the first half (28-28) they soared ahead to a 12-point lead in the second, but gave nearly all of it up at the end, mostly on the strength of Arizona guard Ashley Whisonant's 23 points. After getting to within two, Whisonant threw up a final three-point attempt with the clock nearing zero, but her shot failed to fall as the Huskies held on for the win. “This team is steadily getting better. Earlier, we play these close games and we don't come up with victories, but now we're on a 3-0 run," UW coach Tia Jackson said on KKNW Radio.
