Hoover no stranger to water

Hoover's love of water can be traced even further back to childhood vacations at Cape Cod. Those days created a penchant for seafood, which lead to the occasional trip east for fried clams.

The new chamber director is not naive enough to think Kent could spawn the type of economic activity downtown Peninsula enjoys during summer months. But, as bike trails come together in Kent, it's obvious both communities share some amenities. And Kent has the promise of canoe and kayak activity, whereas Peninsula relies heavily on bicycle traffic.

"I think it's a piece," Hoover said of the proposed white water park. "It's not going to be the one thing. The challenge with something like that is it's very seasonal."

The chamber board of directors voted Thursday to appoint Hoover to take over for former director Dan Smith.

Fishing | Columbia spring chinook verdict due

Fishing was also off the charts at Point Thompson/Boulder Reef area off Orcas Island, and Sucia Pass is another traditional place to try in February. The mark rate [hatchery fish with a missing adipose fin] is right around 50 to 60 percent."

Fishing remains decent at Lip Lip Point off Marrowstone Island and Midchannel Bank off Port Townsend, and the southern part of Area 9 started to pick up.

The Real Reformer

We started during the Clinton administration to transition the VA system to a paperless system. .  .  . The VA is leading the way in reducing medical errors, improving patient safety, and delivering high quality care; now this is a lesson about what can be done when we have a plan. A plan that is evidence-based, a plan that uses what we know works, and a system that we can actually get to respond to that evidence-based planning.

In fact, as a government audit discovered, the VA's paperless system has created a huge bottleneck, losing track of 53,000 veterans.

Last year, Obama introduced legislation requiring the VA to treat each returning vet in 30 days. Yet, the VA already had such a requirement, and, according to internal VA audits, 25 percent of all vets wait more than 30 days for their first exam.

Wild Card -- Weekend

Outfielder Matt Lawton is shown running the bases as a Pittsburgh Pirate in spring training camp last year. Now, he's the latest signing by the Seattle Mariners. But he won't be with them on opening day no matter how great a spring he has because he'll be serving a suspension for steroid use at the end of last season here.

1. Freelancer Milt Priggee/Gig Harbor is enjoying the resurgence of the Seattle Seahawks as much as anyone in the NW this holiday season here.

Gotta love the bump -- to a better grade of service

They worked the system.

To unlock the secrets of free or discounted upgrades for planes, hotel rooms, rental cars and cruise cabins, we went to industry experts and frequent travelers. Here are their tips.

AIRLINE UPGRADES

• Use the upgrade certificates airlines send you for being a frequent flier, or ask friends holding transferable coupons with looming expiration dates if you can take them off their hands.

• Though airlines most frequently award their elite passengers upgrades, it never hurts to be the first in line at the gate counter and inquire about a bump in class. (Ask the gate representative, not the check-in agent, who does not control domestic first-class seating assignments.) Alternately, don't be the first to board; hang back in case economy seats are needed and there is extra space in first class -- you just might be offered that elite seat.

US elections 2004

For supporters of John Kerry, who have seen allegations about the Democratic candidate's military record sap his campaign, it must have seemed like a case of just deserts.

The president, George Bush, was last week looking vulnerable on the same grounds after CBS's flagship current affairs show, 60 Minutes, broadcast a report claiming he had been suspended from pilot duties for failing to meet the required standards. It was also claimed that a commanding officer had been put under pressure to "sugar coat" Mr Bush's performance reviews.

But while CBS stands by its story, allegations have now surfaced that 60 Minutes based a large part of the report on forged documents.

Although what one man - even a presidential candidate - did more than 30 years ago can seem rather trivial, the US election is being fought between a self-declared "war president" and a man who, in stump speeches, claims he would defend his country as president in the way he had defended it as a young man.

Protect Your Pets From Winter's Woes

Dogs seem to be quite well insulated even on their feet, they're walking around barefoot in the snow," Dr. Nield said.

He said to keep your pets warm in the winter, the good 'ole fashioned doghouse is the way to go.

And when it comes to outdoor hounds, the vet said they may scarf down more than usual to get enough body heat to stay toasty.

But for Jack, he's just wagging his tail and loving life, no matter what the weather may be.

"He's pretty spoiled as you can see."

The best prescription for keeping your pal happy and healthy- just snuggle up and give 'em lots of love.

The vet says it is a good idea for thin-coated breeds to layer up if they're going to be outside.

Again, Dr. Nield said it's very important for your pets to be out of the wind, off the ground and always dry.

But, this has increased almost four-fold from nine million in 1980.

A heavy emphasis on industrialisation in Pakistan means that the rate of increase in emissions is going up. The energy sector contributes the most to emissions: 53 per cent.

At the same time, Pakistans decreasing forest cover is suffering from among the worlds worst deforestation rates, primarily from the large logging industry. Forest cover declined to 2.5 per cent in 2005 from 3.3 per cent in the late 1990s.

Some of the 11 climatic zones in the country are under threat of extinction, while the coastline of 990km is considered vulnerable to the rise in ocean levels. The agricultural sector is the most vulnerable to climate change, and changes in cropping and productivity are already affecting livelihoods.
