My favorite athletic misdeed occurred about 10 years ago at the U. of Michigan, when the Men’s Hockey coach was cited for urinating in public. His urinal? The university library. Oh, the symbolism... Dr. RingDing, at 8:46 am EST on November 8, 2006 .
Hottest Hybrids of 2008
The only other vehicle segment that grew faster than hybrids in 2007 was what CNW calls "budget cars." Sales of these small, inexpensive models, which include the Chevrolet Aveo, Honda Fit, and Toyota Yaris, grew at an astonishing rate of nearly 48 percent. With rising gas prices and higher fuel economy standards mandated by the federal government, analysts expect hybrid technology to proliferate in the coming years. "You're going to see wider availability of hybrid powertrains as options on more and more vehicles," says David Wurster, president of the Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based market research firm Vincentric. "I don't think they're going to be the ‘unique' vehicles for much longer because it's going to become commonplace technology." With new models entering the market and their popularity expected to rise, CNW predicts that 1.1 million hybrids will be sold annually by 2010.

David Cronenberg, the Canadian director behind the critically acclaimed Eastern Promises, said the proposed plan doesn't belong in Canada. All aboard the monoline Titanic
That's the sine qua non of a so-called commercial rescue of the Rock. But it is literally the worst time in recorded history to buy such insurance. The one or two reinsurers still in business can charge what they like for this service. Would it be in taxpayers interest for the chancellor and prime minister to pay out eye-watering amounts of our money for this bond-wrap or guarantee? Mr Brown and Mr Darling be make a tasty dish for the Public Accounts Committee if they even thought about doing so. Update 09:29: Oh to have been a fly on the wall in the offices of New Star, the fund manager, when its share opened more than 40% lower this morning, knocking more than £130m off the value of the company. The reaction from John Duffield - New Star's strong-willed founder who is probably best known for having made some colourful remarks about the Germans a few years ago - would probably have been great theatre.
Feature: ‘Protecting the earth should be part of our soul’
Environmental activism is often thought of as the domain of the hippie, a project undertaken by someone with enough time and resources to swim with the dolphins or live in a tree. Jarid Manos, founder and CEO of the Great Plains Restoration Council and author of the memoir "Ghetto Plainsman," paints a much different picture of a man trying to save the earth. A gay son of an Italian immigrant father (who likely has North African ancestry), with a history of drug dealing and hustling, Manos is poised to change the popular idea of what it means to take care of our planet. Though he’s already responsible for the salvation of thousands of acres of Texas prairie, Manos finds that people have trouble overlooking his background. "They think I’m a thug, or just off the street," Manos says.

This weekend, many Minnesotans watching the Oscars will root for "Juno" or "No Country for Old Men." A great deal has been made of the moviemakers' Minnesota roots. Both are up for Best Picture and a host of other Oscars. But how deep are those roots and what would Oscar wins really mean for Minnesota? .
Governor congratulates carpentry program grads at prison
Schwarzenegger called on Dent and the other women to take their newfound sense of purpose with them to succeed on the outside. The 1-year-old carpentry program provides female inmates with high-paying skills and connects them with unions and employers upon parole. Such efforts are a focal point of the California Corrections and Rehabilitation Department's drive to reduce California's recidivism rate. About 70 percent of the state's parolees end up back in prison. Comparing the graduation to a red-carpet movie premiere, Schwarzenegger told the women they are stars in the state's rehabilitation effort. "You are the stars because you made a commitment to yourselves. It takes a lot of will," he told the throng of cheering women. "When you get out you're going to be a great contribution to society.
CBS 46 Investigates: Atlanta Payroll
The CBS Atlanta station recently ran a story on the City of Atlanta's overtime and payroll. The story clearly misrepresented the facts and it is important to clarify the facts for the public. The story implied that 2006 overtime payments to Aviation and Watershed employees had an impact on the current projected shortfall-that is incorrect. Neither of these departments is in the General Fund, which is where the shortfall is projected. Budgeting for overtime is a standard municipal practice and not the exception in local government. Overtime attributed to the Department of Watershed Management is largely the result of its attempts to meet the extremely tight Consent Decree deadlines. As you are no doubt aware, Atlanta's 15-year deadline is roughly half the deadlines enjoyed by other cities under similar consent decrees.
